Jun Ho

Jun Ho is a 6th-grade student at an international school in Korea. He joined the class in the middle of the second semester, so he had a difficult time adjusting to the school. The second day of school, he had told the teacher that he was going to the bathroom. Later, the school found out that he had gone home. His mom called the school and apologized and asked if the homeroom teacher can talk to him and see if there's something that can be done to help him adjust to the school. After talking with Jun Ho and the school administrators, the teacher found out that Jun Ho's English proficiency was far below the current 6th-grade level. He had scored very low on his English entrance exams and wasn't recommended to be admitted to the school as he would have difficulty following the classes. However, regardless of his English test scores, the school had made a decision to admit him.

On his first day of school, Jun Ho had realized that his English level was too low to be able to understand any of the instructions given in the classes. It was already very difficult to be a new student, but not being able to follow the class like the rest of the students made him feel very small and out of place. The homeroom teacher took some time to talk to him and encouraged him to just to his best. The teacher also promised him that he would do all he can to help him adjust to the school. The homeroom teacher also informed all the other subject teachers of Jun Ho's situation.

RTI Plan

1. Universal Screening

All students prior to entering the school are required to pass an English entrance exam. They are also tested on the core subjects such as math, science, history, and English. Although Jun Ho did not pass the English exam, he did do well in math. After observing Jun Ho for several weeks, it is apparent that he struggles in classes that are taught in English. Jun Ho will be given a separate English proficiency exam at the end of the semester.

Jon Ho will continue to be in Tier 1 classes, but will also be in tier 2 classes as he will need the extra help. If he struggles even in tier 2, he may have to fall to tier 1.

2. Progress Monitoring

Jun Ho along with other struggling ELL students has been placed in an ESL class.  The ESL class was not available at the beginning of the semester. However, due to the high number of students struggling with English, it was necessary to open an ESL class. This will be considered the tier1 for English. Jun Ho will be monitored closely throughout the semester to make sure that he is learning and understanding the materials he is being taught. All the students will be reading and completing assignments from Razkids. Although most of the students are only assigned 2 books per week, students in Tier 2 level will be required to complete 3 books. Jun Ho will be in Tier 2 and be required to complete 3 books per week. I will monitor his progress closely with the three books he completes each week and follow-up with him twice a week. He will also be given an extra vocabulary word list that he will be tested on each week.

3. Data-Based Decision Making

All the teachers that have Jun Ho in their classes are already informed of his low English proficiency and have taken that into consideration when teaching or evaluating him. At the end of the week, his weekly progress will be reported by other teachers and myself to see if Jun Ho is making progress. We will discuss and provide suggestions about how to help Jun Ho in each of the classes. If there are techniques used by other teachers that have been effective, I will most likely adjust my techniques and try theirs. Throughout the semester, Jun Ho will be moved between Tiers 1, 2, and 3 based on his performance and assessments.

4. Mult-Level Intervention System

Throughout the semester, Jun Ho will be evaluated what tier he needs to be in using the Universal Screening, Progress Monitoring, and Data-Based Decision Making. As Jun Ho is in Tier 2, he will be provided with more individualized instruction compared to those students in Tier 1. He will be also given constant feedback on his progress. If he does well, he will be praised, but if he shows lack of effort, he will be disciplined.
