Gradual Release of Responsibility

My reflection on using gradual release responsibility method in my economics class

It would have been easy to simply use the gradual release responsibility method in my grammar class. However, I wanted to see how I could use this method in my other classes. The class I chose was the economics class that I teach to 9th-grade high school students. Initially, I didn't have a clue on how I was going to apply this strategy to any of my lessons. Usually, most of the lessons are going over basic concepts and situations that explain them. This week, we were going over a chapter on the "free enterprise system" and how we were all free to start a business or enterprise. As I was trying to plan a lesson using this method, one of my favorite TV show called "Shark Tank" appeared on my youtube channel. I didn't think much of it at first and ended up watching the whole episode. Then, everything clicked and I knew exactly what  I needed to do to apply this method to my lesson for this class.

The video didn't capture everything that I wanted to show, but it did cover all the parts of the gradual release responsibility method. Before going over the activity, I went over key vocabulary words that would be introduced in the TV show. Some of them were profit, entrepreneur, investor, valuation, and etc. After going over the words, I introduced to them the TV show, "Shark Tank" to the students and the activity they would be doing. I thought that by following this method, it definitely helped the students to understand exactly what to do and how to do the activity. They knew what to watch for in order complete the worksheet. If I had not gone over the worksheet with the actual video with the students, they probably would have had difficulty catching the key points in order to complete the worksheet.

Although this lesson took some time in planning, I thought it was a great way for students to not only learn, but effectively complete a given task without having any issues.
