Student Project: My Family Powerpoint

An important step to understanding Global Citizenship is understanding one’s own cultural background. This project requires students to communicate with their family about their traditions and cultures, and present that to the class.

This project will allow students to introduce their family to their class, as well as give them a chance to explore their own culture and familial relations more.

Tasks:

The students will create and present a Slideshow of at least 4 slides with the following content.

  • A title slide.

  • A “Me” slide.
    • Include a photograph of yourself using the camera app on a mobile device, or using a digital camera. This can be any style, including portrait, a candid photo, or even a selfie. Feel free to get creative with filters and photo effects.
    • Include your birthday.
    • Include at least one like and dislike. This can be anything, from activities, to food, or movies.

  • At least one slide for family members.
    • Please include one slide per family member.
    • You are encouraged to add as many family members as you can.
    • Include a photo, taken from a camera app on a mobile device or digital camera if possible. This can be any style.
    • Include the family member’s full name, relation to you, and also the name you call them. For example, my grandmother is Kathleen Edgar, but I call her Nanny.

  • Include at least one slide describing a special activity your family does together. This can be anything from a cultural celebration to a family board game night.
    • How often do you do this activity? Is it a yearly event? Is it a weekly event?
    • Why do you do this activity? If you’re not sure, ask your family!

This project allows students to use creativity and technology skills to create something that is unique to their family. In addition to using powerpoint or similar presentation software, the students will get a chance to explore and be creative with the many functions of a digital camera. It will also require them to communicate and collaborate with members of their family in order to get the information that is required to complete the assignment. Presenting the slideshow will also require them to use communication skills. Listening to their classmate’s presentations will give them a better understanding of different cultural backgrounds and learn about what makes each family special.
